Arunachal Village Residents Ink MoU to Facilitate Siang Multipurpose Project PFR

In a major advancement for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), an MoU was signed between the Government of Arunachal Pradesh (GoAP) and residents of Pangkang Jorkong village, granting consent for activities related to the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) of the project. This MoU was supported by 79 out of 86 households in Pangkang Jorkong village, reflecting strong community backing for a project deemed significant for national interest, aimed at bolstering India’s energy security and propelling regional development. The agreement was signed by Siang Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu for GoAP and Tamyo Mingki for the villagers. The event included notable attendees such as Ojing Tasing, the Minister for Rural Development, along with senior officials and community representatives. Minister Tasing highlighted that the local community’s growing engagement is indicative of the trust placed in the project, emphasizing the government’s dedication to inclusive and transparent development aligned with the people’s aspirations. He noted that the PFR activities are crucial for a thorough assessment of the project, balanced with the protection of environmental and community interests. The MoU is specifically focused on the PFR, and upon its successful completion, the government plans to consult with Project Affected Families (PAFs) to devise appropriate relief and rehabilitation packages as well as special development initiatives for their sustainable progress. The community reiterated their support for the PFR-related endeavors while stressing the importance of ongoing dialogue, transparency, and protection of local interests. The SUMP aims to serve as a key infrastructure project for hydropower generation, flood management, and socio-economic growth in Arunachal Pradesh.
