Deep tribute was paid today at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Borjhar, on the western outskirts of Guwahati, on the birth anniversary of Assam’s first Chief Minister and Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi.
It may be noted that Assam was saved from being included in Pakistan due to Gopinath Bordoloi’s political acumen, strong leadership, and personality.
The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of lamps and floral tributes at the statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi at the airport by Guwahati Airport’s Chief Airport Officer Mukesh Nankani. Employees of Guwahati International Airport Limited along with several personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force were present at the event.
To commemorate the special day of the birth anniversary and to celebrate the great legacy of the Bharat Ratna awardee, terminal staff distributed saplings among passengers.
It is to be mentioned that in 1998, the then Chief Minister of Assam Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and West Guwahati MLA and Assam Cabinet Minister Ramendra Narayan Kalita had demanded that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre confer the Bharat Ratna posthumously on Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi and name the Northeast’s largest Guwahati airport after him, so that his memory is immortalized and the country’s emerging generation can learn about him.
As per the AGP government’s demand, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna on Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi and dedicated Guwahati Airport in his name, sending a positive message to the nation.
Meanwhile, four months ago, a large statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi was installed in front of the airport’s new terminal building through the special initiative of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. The large statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the time of the inauguration of the new terminal building.
