JSW Steel Targets 48.9 MTPA Capacity Despite April Production Slump

JSW Steel, the flagship company of the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group, reported a marginal 1% decline in consolidated crude steel production for April, totaling 2.118 million tonnes compared to 2.14 million tonnes in the same month last year.

The dip was primarily attributed to the planned shutdown of Blast Furnace-3 (BF3) at the Vijayanagar steel complex for capacity expansion. While Indian operations saw a 1% decrease to 2.04 million tonnes, the company highlighted a underlying strength in its performance. When excluding the impact of the BF3 shutdown, JSW’s crude steel output actually registered a robust 10% growth, fueled by the successful ramp-up of Vijayanagar Metallics.

In the United States, JSW’s Ohio operations also saw a 7% slide, producing 78,000 tonnes. Despite these temporary adjustments, capacity utilization for Indian operations remained a strong 94% (excluding the BF3 capacity).

The temporary production slowdown comes as JSW Steel embarks on an aggressive expansion roadmap to reach a consolidated capacity of 48.9 MTPA within four years. Central to this vision is a massive ₹2 trillion investment commitment in Odisha. This includes a 13.2 MTPA integrated steel plant at Paradip and a ₹40,000 crore integrated electric vehicle and battery manufacturing complex in Cuttack.

By diversifying into green energy and electric mobility while scaling its core steel business through strategic joint ventures with JFE Steel and POSCO, JSW Steel is positioning itself as a cornerstone of India’s industrial evolution. Despite a minor April dip, the company’s long-term trajectory suggests a significant shift toward becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse.
